Jair Bolsonaro has been arrested after authorities determined he posed a concrete flight risk while under house arrest.
The ex-president was convicted of orchestrating a military coup in the ninth month and sentenced more than 27 years in incarceration, but he was staying under house arrest pending appeals.
Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes said the decision to arrest the septuagenarian politician was a preventative measure after recent developments were revealed.
This involved trying to remove his ankle monitor and a invitation to a public vigil that could enable a chance to flee".
Court Filing Details Escape Risks
In a paperwork permitting the arrest, the judge said data from the unit overseeing the former president's confinement suggested the one-time head of state's plan to remove the surveillance device to guarantee victory in his getaway".
This, it said, would be assisted by the disorder caused by the gathering called by his offspring.
His child, Flávio Bolsonaro, who works as a senator, called for a meeting of his backers near his father's house to take place on the weekend.
Flávio Bolsonaro wrote on digital networks on Friday: Will you battle for your nation, or observe everything from your mobile device there on your couch? I call on you to fight with us."
He said the demonstration would be so backers could offer prayers for his physical condition and for the return of democracy in our land."
Diplomatic Refuge Fears
Part of the magistrate's ruling was the possibility of the former president's transfer to foreign missions near the dwelling, considering that the inquiries revealed a history of organizing to seek refuge through a embassy office", a declaration said.
The judicial paperwork highlights that the United States embassy in the capital, the capital city, is situated around approximately 13 kilometers from Bolsonaro's home.
Worldwide Consequences
The former president's legal troubles have generated frustration from fellow conservative nationalist American leader Donald Trump, causing him to enact a half-rate duty on imports of Brazilian goods.
He is being detained in a federal law enforcement building in the capital and will experience a detention review on the next day.
Recent Legal Requests
It was only on last Friday that the his legal team asked the High Court to allow him to serve his whole jail sentence under domestic detention, with digital surveillance.
They also petitioned that he be allowed to depart his residence for healthcare, saying he demanded ongoing care for pulmonary infections and other health problems.
Details of Guilty Verdict
He was determined responsible of leading a scheme aimed at maintaining his control after he lost the national vote to his ideological adversary, President Lula.
High Court judges said that he was aware of a plot which included plans to kill the current president and his VP candidate, Alckmin, and to imprison and murder Justice Moraes - the Supreme Court justice who has been managing Bolsonaro's trial.
The scheme was thwarted because it couldn't obtain the endorsement of the armed forces officials. The current president was sworn in without incident on 1 January 2023.
But a following week, on 8 January, many his followers invaded and destroyed public facilities in the federal district, Brasília.
The law enforcement intervened and around 1,500 people were detained.
The justices found that the demonstrators had been provoked by Bolsonaro whose scheme, they said, was for the Brazilian military to take action, reestablish control and reinstate his authority.
At the period, the legal team called the 27 years and three months sentence "absurdly excessive.
He was also prohibited from seeking elected position until 2060 - a decade minus two years after the completion of his term.
The former president called the legal proceedings a targeted investigation" and said it was intended to stop him competing in the 2026 national vote.
