Conservative reactions to the partial release of files related to the Jeffrey Epstein case have been mixed, with certain supporters of the former Trump administration pointing out the prominent appearance of Bill Clinton and other Democratic figures in images, while others lamented how extensive censorship cast Donald Trump and Republicans in a negative light.
Administration Justifies Redactions with Fervent Hyperbole
Administration officials justified the heavily censored sections with fervent hyperbole. “At no point in U.S. the nation's history has a Commander-in-Chief or the Department of Justice been so open with the American people about such a delicate legal matter,” declared Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche, who issued a six-page memo outlining the censorship procedure.
Questions Prompted by Redactions
While Trump's name and likeness appear in some of the materials, the widespread black blocks raise serious questions about the information may be hidden beneath them. Some Republicans swiftly called for increased openness.
“The public are furious and disengaging,” posted Republican Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene.
In a online statement, GOP Kentucky Thomas Massie said the redactions violate the statute, and implied that a future legislature may attempt to remove the top law enforcement official, Pam Bondi, for that offense. “Unfortunately, this file dump grossly does not comply with both the intent and the wording of the act,” he continued.
Some Conservative Commentators Swing In Support of the Disclosure
However, a segment of rightwing commentators and former President loyalists swung firmly in support of the Justice Department's actions.
The disclosed materials—originating from a DOJ led by key Trump associate Pam Bondi—contains scores of pages that are entirely censored, and numerous of the men shown in photographs have their faces obscured.
Yet a few do not, featuring prominent figures like Clinton, pop singer Michael Jackson, and scholar Noam Chomsky. The presence of Clinton, especially, enabled some conservative figures to launch the attack.
“This is quite rich how the Democrats wrongly accused Donald Trump of associating with a pedophile, only for the Trump DOJ to release Epstein files that show Bill Clinton skinny dipping with a convicted sex offender,” wrote right-wing activist Laura Loomer.
“Recently released Epstein Files reveal Bill Clinton shirtless in a jacuzzi with a female that is not his wife Hillary Clinton,” wrote attorney Rogan O’Handley. “There’s only 1 reason Epstein would take pictures of a Commander-in-Chief with a girl in a hot tub: Leverage.”
Former President Campaign Releases Statement
Clinton has consistently said he was aware of zero criminal actions by Epstein and has not been alleged to have engaged in any misconduct. “The White House has not been hiding these files for months only to release them at the last minute on a Friday to shield Bill Clinton,” his representative Angel Ureña stated in a comment.
“This is about protecting themselves from future revelations, or from what they’ll try and conceal permanently. Therefore they can publicize as many grainy decades-old photographs as they desire, but this is not about Bill Clinton. Not previously, not ever be,” the statement added.
Overall Conservative Comment Seems Subdued
However, overall discourse on the political right was comparatively subdued after the release, particularly when compared with the loud calls for transparency that preceded the congressional approval to pass a law mandating the files' release.
Loomer, who not long ago secured media access at the Pentagon, had been among the most vocal advocates for a full disclosure. In February, she chastised the administration generally and Bondi specifically after a set of rightwing influencers were given physical folders of materials that contained no new information.
