Tetris Didn't Succeed at This Gaming Ceremony — Another Award Type May Address This Issue

As any significant prize-giving event approaches, one notices a clamor for introducing fresh award types to recognize overlooked contributions and satisfy the passions of followers with niche passions.

Another commentator previously argued advocating for terror-themed awards. That would be fantastic. The same goes for tabletop games, this being a dedicated supporter's campaign. However, I must insist when I prioritize because like all blinkered fanatics, I possess a compelling case backing this proposal stands as crucial above others. The demand is this: There should be a classification for brain-teasing titles.

Organizing Gaming Categories

Classifying creative works defies precise measurement; opinions vary greatly, and typically generate discussions concluding with vague boundaries. There’s a reason movie academies avoid this approach. Yet it remains a necessary evil in the world of video games, which are so diverse it's challenging to consider them a single creative category.

To recognize the complete range of gaming accomplishments to gain proper attention, and for games of all stripes to compete fairly, classification by type becomes crucial.

Existing Game Classification System

Prominent interactive entertainment events offer these classifications covering Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Collectively, these six categories actually cover a lot of ground, allowing placement for numerous titles.

Different situation exists for puzzle games. No appropriate category exists to put them. Examine these examples from recent excellent titles, all very different: the architectural riddles from a specific release, intense tile-matching of another game, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles from additional release. What category would fit them among existing types? Nowhere, that’s where.

Recognition Challenges

Many instances occur excellent brain-teasers released every year without proper recognition during gaming ceremonies, unless they happen to qualify for categories like Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, or the intensely contested Indie races.

  • An iconic brain-teaser wasn’t nominated completely that year
  • A different innovative game missed out in 2019
  • Popular arranging title received no acknowledgment in 2021
  • Only a few puzzle games scraped into niche award types

Value of Brain-Teasers

These are often modest productions, but the art in brain-teasers holds tremendous importance. Famous handheld logic titles count as most engaged experiences worldwide and have been for an extended period.

The legendary block-stacking game rivals popular creative games competing to become best-selling game of all time; it’s also in the running for top gaming experience. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks to the art of video games, while interacting with almost every other genre.

Proposal and Rationale

Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter that issue. You could fill multiple candidates engaging, different, qualified experiences each ceremony simply — perhaps, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave so many good games out.

And to reiterate, these are games that otherwise have no home at major gaming awards. Puzzle game makers are working at the hard edge of video game design, developing some of most fundamental forms within interactive entertainment. Comparable to cinema stunt performers, they deserve recognition. Let’s not keep them waiting decades.
