Together Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Romantic Bond.

Here's a dare for partners in committed relationships who are fans of horror films: Get comfortable with your loved one and watch Together. The critically acclaimed 2025 movie just made its online premiere on the Hulu service. On the surface, it may seem like standard biological terror, but within Together resides a intense examination about the ways we decide to love our partners.

A Directorial Debut Investigating Relationship Dynamics

Together marks the first full-length movie for director Michael Shanks. It stars the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Tim and Millie, a pair who are not married that have stayed together for a decade. Having wed in real life in 2017, Franco and Brie infuse a special spark to their portrayals, masterfully depicting both the strengths and weaknesses of a committed partnership.

The plot starts when Tim and Millie relocate from the urban environment to the rural area for her career. A commonly used story element, admittedly, but that’s primarily where the cliches conclude. Together evolves into as much a deep dive into the psyche of the partnership as it is a body horror flick.

An Otherworldly Trigger

While hiking near their rural residence, a tempest descends, and the protagonists tumble into an hole in the earth. After spending the night there and eventually escaping, a strange force takes hold of the pair. This force compels a paranormal intimacy between them that goes far beyond simple connection.

The whole movie is a gradually intensifying fright fest, weaving in elements of fever-dream horrors, gross (but tastefully done) body horror, and surprisingly comedic interactions (sometimes in the middle of something horrific). The director skillfully blends these components seamlessly and presents them in a slowly mounting sense of impending doom.

Nuanced Portrayals

A significant portion of Together is solely Brie and Franco, and they deftly portray manifold depths to the characters’ relationship. Millie’s confidence and feeling of intimacy is waning due to a lack of intimacy. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his unwillingness to pursue anything but his failing musical ambitions gradually emerges.

Tim, on the other hand senses confinement and separated by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve left the city and distant from his network of friends. He is terrified of the idea of utterly sacrificing his sense of self in his partner. This fear is intensified by the circumstance he can’t drive and is dependent on Millie for transportation.

The director's cleverest decision is that he refrains from painting either of his characters the obvious villain.

Tim and Millie grapple with the kind of problems that are inherent in any relationship over a long period. Deep down, they still love each other. They find humor with each other, offer support, and share intimately at times. But below this facade, there’s an inescapable undercurrent of doubt about their bond.

Thematic Depth

While the paranormal elements in Together symbolize these fears of codependency and totally devoting oneself to another person, the metaphor avoids being overly obvious or self-important. Instead, these visceral horror elements provide a ideal counterpart to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the frights and the fights serve the other in a mutually beneficial way.

A Divisive Ending

Together’s conclusion, which remains unspoiled, has created disagreement on the movie's final takeaway about codependent relationships. It has been said that those not in relationships have interpreted the film as a powerful case for remaining unattached. On the other hand, a few pairs experiencing tension found that the film ultimately assisted them resolve their issues.

Regardless of your relationship status, your own interpretation could function as a revealing measure of how you perceive partnership. Will the finale inspire a sense of discomfort and fear, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you recognize your own traits in Tim or Millie and yell at the screen, or simply glance toward your other half and say, “I’d do that for you”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an exploration you can undertake at this very moment.
