Wimbledon Introduces Video Replay Technology in 2025.

Wimbledon tennis court with replay system

The tournament joins the American and Australian Opens in implementing replay technology.

Replay technology are set to arrive at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.

Competitors will gain the option to challenge particular calls from the chair umpire, echoing the system currently in place at both the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

The new system will be accessible on Centre Court and the number one court for the duration of the Championships and on the remaining featured courts when they are staging singles contests.

This development follows just a season following the All England Club introduced ELC, which terminated the centuries-old tradition of line officials.

Scope of Challenges

Competitors cannot to challenge the call of the ELC system, but are allowed to request the umpire to review specific decisions, including:

  • If a ball has bounced twice.
  • If a ball touched an rival's racket or person during play.
  • Potential interference at the conclusion of a point.

Notably, there is no cap on the number of challenges a player can ask for.

A Recent Example

An illustrative incident took place in a recent tournament last week, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the review system against Jack Draper.

Draper conceded it was a tough call for the official, but believed his opponent had "used the regulations quite well."

The umpire viewed a video and ruled Draper was responsible for interference, granting the rally to his opponent.

Broader Adoption

Video reviews are not exclusive to major tournaments. It has been in use at the American major for two years and the Aussie Open this year.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour will have the system implemented at every one of its events.

Additional Innovations

Another innovation at The Championships 2025 involves the addition of visual indicators on scoreboards to support the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses instances where spectators have sometimes been uncertain if a shot was in or out.

In other news, with exactly a century of days to go until the start of the tournament, organizers have further revealed an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
